Abstract

Metadiscourse is a concept that has shed new light into linguistic analysis by developing the interpersonal macro-function or tenor (Halliday, 1978), thus allowing to deepen into the way in which the relation author-reader manifests textually. Only recently has it been applied to the teaching of specialized translation (Suau Jiménez & Dolón Herrero, 2008; Suau Jiménez, 2010a, 2010b). Its importance is central in the translation of journalistic genres, since their communicative purpose is partly that of entertaining and informing readers from a persuasive focus (Dafouz Milne, 2008). Interpersonal metadiscourse forms patterns or models (Hyland & Tse, 2004) which are constrained by the boundaries of genre and the language characteristics. Therefore, it shows a sociolinguistic and cultural basis which can vary. This is crucial in specialized translation, since the source and target texts may differ in their metadiscursive patterns and translators must be aware of these differences that, if poorly translated, can damage the communicative purpose and style of texts. In the teaching of translation, it is necessary to provide students with metadiscursive referents that assist them in the processing of texts, thus guaranteeing quality in the final product. The work this paper reports attempts a metadiscursive analysis of a corpus collected from news and opinion journalistic subgenres in texts of economy and business in English and Spanish. It suggests differences both internal and cross-linguistically and draws conclusions that are eventually proposed as referential tools for the teaching of these subgenres translation.
