Abstract

In the last decades, studies on documentary cinema have emphasized the progressive blurring of borders with fiction works and characterized such productions as hybrid objects. Even though the borders between the two domains were never as rigid as it is often pointed out, it is true that a high degree of stylization has become a constant feature in contemporary documentary film. This article analyzes a number of Latin American documentaries produced in the last two decades by taking into account the dialogue the films establish with different cinematographic genres: horror cinema, road movie and film noir. The appropriation of narrative structures, procedures and iconographies of the different genres provides documentaries with a series of key tools for the articulation of personal and collective stories.

Pablo Lanza, Universidad de Buenos Aires / Centro de Investigación y Nuevos Estudios sobre Cine (CIYNE)

Pablo Lanza teaches History of World Cinema at the Faculty of Humanities, Universidad de Buenos Aires. He holds a PhD in History and Theory of the Arts (UBA), is a member of the Center for Research and New Studies on Cinema (CIYNE) and of the editorial committee of the digital magazine Cine Documental . His current research focuses on the intersections between documentary film, the detective genre, and investigative journalism. He has published articles in national and international magazines on the history of cinema and is co-author of the books Cine y Revolución en América Latina (2014), Una historia del cine político y social en Argentina Vol. II (2010) and Reflexiones teóricas sobre cine contemporáneo (2010).
