Abstract

Brian Friel (Omagh, 1929) wrote the play Translations in 1980. Friel shares with other post-colonial writers the neurosis of having to use a language that is not the one from his ancestors. With his plays he tries to find his own way of expression acknowledging the hybrid nature of the new culture. In this play he makes use of a topographic metaphor: the making of a map of Ireland by the British army in 1833. Here we will find a disappearing way of life, and the difficulty of adapting to the imposed one. The reactions will differ: some will learn to live in this new land, some will hope for an impossible way back, many others will be left wandering in nowhere land.
