Abstract

Circe and Medea are the first sorcerers of Western literature and constitute the initial representation of a magic category known as “classic sorcerers”, which attained great complexity during Classicism. This magic typology will be one of the most important in the Spanish literary tradition, above all from Renaissance onwards. It predominates in Baroque drama, because the classic sorcerers appear in the mythological comedy as a reference to classical literature and as excuse to enrich the spectacle.
