This article studies and qualitatively evaluates the landscape of the agricultural system of olive trees in Maestrat (Valencian Country) using a qualitative method based on the MTAS project (Multifunctional Territorialized Agri-food Systems), which studies and describes alternative agricultural systems to the agro-industrial model currently prevailing worldwide. The results show that Maestrat olive-growing system coincides with most of the criteria that define a MTAS, especially with regard to the preservation of the landscape. On the other hand, in terms of food production, the Maestrat system does not fall within the MTAS parameters. Certain environmental conditions (soil and climate) and the high average age of the farmers are conducive to low-quality production, which survives only thanks to the cooperative system and CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) aid. Only a small number of olive growers in Maestrat produce high quality oil that meets the MTAS criteria.
