Should raw machine translation be used for public-health information? Suggestions for a multilingual communication policy in Catalonia

A mesura que Catalunya esdevé més i més multicultural a molts nivells com a conseqüència de la immigració, parlants d’un nombre creixent de llengües reben les comunicacions oficials de l’administració. Per a algunes llengües, es contracten professionals de la traducció perquè se n’encarreguen. Per als idiomes no oficials, però, hi ha una confiança creixent en l'ús de la traducció automàtica en línia gratuïta, explícitament sense correcció humana (postedició). Aquest article estudia l'ús de Google Translate a la web oficial del servei de salut de Catalunya, centrant-se en la informació de la vacunació contra la covid-19 els anys 2021 i 2022. Assenyalem els avantatges estratègics de la traducció automàtica i després examinem la naturalesa dels principals errors comesos, alguns dels quals resulten en missatges incomprensibles i autocontradictoris. Es proposa la necessitat d'una política de comunicació multilingüe per a la mitigació d'errors no tan sols mitjançant l'ús racional del programari que utilitza memòries de traducció i una postedició eficient, sinó sobretot redactant textos de manera que els problemes de traducció automàtica es resolguen abans que no apareguen (preedició). En una absència relativa de polítiques per a les llengües no oficials, es requereix una planificació estratègica per garantir que els beneficis de la traducció automàtica puguen contribuir a una societat més inclusiva, en lloc d'alienar les persones usuàries que veuen el mal ús que es fa de les seues llengües.
