Should raw machine translation be used for public-health information? Suggestions for a multilingual communication policy in Catalonia

Resumen

A medida que Cataluña se vuelve cada vez más multicultural a muchos niveles como consecuencia de la inmigración, son también más numerosas las personas hablantes de lenguas diferentes las que reciben las comunicaciones oficiales de la administración. Para algunas lenguas, se contratan a profesionales de la traducción. Sin embargo, para los idiomas no oficiales existe una confianza creciente en el uso de la traducción automática en línea gratuita, explícitamente sin corrección humana (postedición). Este artículo estudia el uso de Google Translate en la web oficial del servicio de salud de Cataluña, centrándose en la información de la vacunación contra la covid-19 en los años 2021 y 2022. Señalamos las ventajas estratégicas de la traducción automática y después examinamos la naturaleza de los principales errores cometidos, algunos de los cuales resultan en mensajes incomprensibles y autocontradictorios. Se propone la necesidad de una política de comunicación multilingüe para la mitigación de errores no solo mediante el uso racional del software que utiliza memorias de traducción junto con una postedición eficiente, sino sobre todo redactando textos de forma que los problemas de traducción automática se resuelvan antes de que aparezcan (preedición). En una ausencia relativa de políticas para las lenguas no oficiales, se requiere una planificación estratégica para garantizar que los beneficios de la traducción automática puedan contribuir a una sociedad más inclusiva, en lugar de enajenar a las personas usuarias que ven el mal uso que se hace de sus lenguas.
