Cinema is an art of time, a mode of thinking and of expression capable of showing events in their duration. This means that, through cinema, we can ponder about the nature and the essence of time, and about how they can be revealed through film form. A relationship established between and among cinema’s basic constitutive elements: the photographic image and the illusion of movement, the clash between still image and moving image, –can help revealing the capability the filmic image has in showing time in its foundation. Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy will serve as a crucial conceptual tool for the analysis: the notions of time-image, optical-sound pure situations and especially that of crystal-image.
