Haptic Visuality and the Subjective Free Indirect in Queer Cinema: a Dialogue Between Pasolini and Martel

Abstract

This article proposes an exploration of the synergies between the haptic visuality conceptualized by Laura Marks and the subjective free indirect defined by Pasolini, as well as the successive reinterpretations of the concept carried out by authors such as Deleuze or Mirizio. Our goal is to analyse how these theoretical perspectives converge in the so-called Salta Trilogy, directed by Lucrecia Martel. Through a careful analysis of La ciénaga (2001), La niña santa (2004), and La mujer sin cabeza (2008), we aim to explore how the intersection between haptic visuality and free indirect subjective can shed light on narrative and sensory strategies in Lucrecia Martel’s filmography, enriching our understanding of her unique contribution to cinematic language.

Author Biography

Lucia Gloria Vázquez-Rodriguez, University College London

Lucía-Gloria Vázquez-Rodríguez is a Lecturer on Digital Media at University College London (UCL), where she conducts research on Feminist and Queer Media Studies. She holds a Master’s degree in Film and Philosophy from King’s College London, and a PhD in Audiovisual Communication from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Since 2016 she has been teaching and conducting research on queer cinema and TV, feminist approaches to journalism and women’s cinema, areas in which she has published several articles and book chapters. She is content manager of AGEMI (Advancing Gender Equality in Media Industries), collaborates in the UNESCO-UNITWIN Network on Gender, Media & ICTs, and is a member of ReMAP (Research on Media, Arts, & Play). Her thesis focused on the representation of desires, bodies and queer identities in Latin American cinema directed by women.
