Abstract

This article provides a discussion of the poem “Profils Perdus,” by the contemporary American poet Timothy Steele, one of the “New Formalist” group. We consider the various ways in which this poem maintains a tension between evanescence and permanence, and how this tension is reflected in its formal structure. As a background to our treatment of “Perfils Perdus,” we locate the roots of free verse in Romantic theories of organicism, especially as they are manifested in the writings of Martin Heidegger and R. W. Emerson.
