Abstract

The Diccionario Nacional  of Ramón Joaquín Domínguez (Madrid, 1846- 47), an encyclopaedic dictionary, is a valid source for the study of pragmatics from a historical perspective: it offers information about the verbal behaviour of individuals of those days, the “modern” uses of voices marked as “familiar” (colloquial ) and the different meanings according to the circumstances of utterance, the environment or the intention of the speakers. This paper deals with the study of different pragmalinguistic aspects: forms of address, elements of politeness and social treatment and their use, interjections and their conditions of use, offensive or forbidden words, etc. These allow a diachronic inquiry in the field of Spanish studies.
