Abstract

The paper provides a Critical Discourse Analysis of the debates surrounding gender equality legislation in Estonia, as represented in the news articles of one of the leading quality daily papers, the Postimees . The corpus consists of 40 texts from the years 2002 to 2004, covering the period during which the legislation was debated in the Parliament. The main aim of the study is to trace the underlying ideological stance in the news stories. The analysis will look into topics/semantic macrostructures, local meanings and the mental models they create. The resulting mental models will be given a social interpretation in an attempt to explain how the texts reflect the dominant ideological consensus and help reproduce it by othering  gender equality as an alien concept in the redefinition of Estonian identity.
