Abstract

This article focuses on the stdy of verb complementation comparing two romance languages, which ara catalan and spanish. More specifically, the current research is aimed at highlighting to what extent both languages coincide and differ as what regards dative and accusative verb complementation, extending further to consider dialectal variation. starting from their linguistic behaviour, these verbs are classified by the author into two groups, referred to as dyinamic verbas and psycholoical verbas respectively. With regard to dynamic verbs, both a conservative tendency can be traced inasmuch as dative complementation is mintained, and a more innovative trend that allows for a reinterpretation of dative into accusative complementation. With psychological verbs, on the other hand, the contrary does generally apply: accusative complementation shifts to dative complementation. these processes of changing verb complementation do not affect all the verbs in the same way. Generally speaking, they have to be attributed to evolutionary processes taking place in specific dialectal areas.
