The first part of this article discusses the circumstances that explain the social problematization of truancy in contemporary Spain. The second analyzes the social and institutional factors which limit the increasing institutional crusade against this problem. The third reveals some effects of the concentration of truancy cases in the dynamics of classrooms and schools. The last part discusses the formal and informal strategies used by teachers and social workers against truancy.
