Two literary topoi (world upside-down and locus amoenus) in J. V. Foix’s poetry

Abstract

J. V. Foix’s work often incorporates themes, metaphors or rhythmic or strophic forms that come from the literary tradition, including folklore and classical literature, in a tradition that includes, as he says in the prologue to Sol, i de dol “[Catalans], Provençals and Tuscans”. These authorities are manifested in his work in various ways, such as epigraphs, intertextualities and especially rewriting. We will examine this last case in the treatment of two specific topoi: the upside-down world and landscape, in poems from two consecutive books: Les irreals omegues (1949) and On he deixat les claus… (1954).
