Abstract

Tales from Ovid (1997) was one of the last works by the English poet Ted Hughes (1930-1998). It is a collection of twenty-four poems, twenty-four passages selected and rewritten from Ovid’s  Metamorphoses. The purpose of this essay is doublefold: first, we offer a brief description and a reflection on the intertextual strategies and the translation techniques put to use by Ted Hughes in his version; secondly, we present our own contributions to the continuing process of transformation inspired and effected on Ovid’s texts, translating into Catalan and Spanish, respectively, the first (“Creation; Four Ages; Flood; Lycaon”) and the last (“Pyramus and Thysbe”) of the poems in Hughes’s book.
