The ethical and political project of the free software community carries with it a way to conceptualize culture as free in the sense of transparent control and accessibility. This liberating spirit is not only the engine for the developement of free applications but also for the social uses of some editing tools, like wiki sites and weblogs. In spite of differences between them, wikis and blogs both promote the open sharing of electronic information by using simple and accessible kinds of software. This paper analyzes the main uses of these interactive communication tools and identifies at least six key features that link the spirit of free software with wikis and blogs: collaborative work, textuality open to modifications, public access to information and shared knowledge, dissolution of individual authorship, free access to content and new commercial opportunities.
