The main aim of this paper is to analyze the rising tuition fees in 66% implemented in Catalonia in 2012-13 academic year, and the role of government grants. We analyze freshman’s profile in two Catalan universities. We take into account variables as social class, degree choice and grant applied, and we compar the year before and the year after of rising tuition fees. The findings show that there are a different social composition according degrees analyzed, related to cost of going to university (tuition fees) and the difficulty to pass courses. In this sense, there is stratification on universities analized, and an increase of it, which moves the university system far from participation equity.
