This article projects a brief critical-genealogical look at the development of the area of knowledge of Didactics of Social Sciences (DSS) in Spain, from its constitution in 1984 to the present. For this purpose, the deployment of this territory of academic knowledge-power is linked to the triumph of mass schooling and technocracy in the educational field. In the light of the analysis of this past, it concludes by problematizing the present of DSS in the university space, while enunciating the ontological difficulties it presents to contribute to the transformation of society and education in a counter-hegemonic sense.
