Abstract

This article analyses the film adaptation of the story Ceci n’est pas un conte [This is not a story] by Denis Diderot, brought to the screen by the Spanish Paulino Viota as Jaula de todos. After analysing the narrative instances and structural differences, we have focused on the treatment of the female character. Her transformations respond to the historical context of production of each work (on the one hand, the French 18th century, on the other, the late Francoist period), but also to the Spanish filmmaker’s desire to liberate women from the alienating dependence on men.
